The history of the ice cream sundae, while debated, sure is a sweet story. Many tales claim that the sundae originated in Illinois as a variation of the popular ice cream soda. Drinking soda had been outlawed on Sundays in the state and this treat became a delectable alternative.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin claims the ice cream sundae was invented when George Hallauer asked Edward C. Berners, the owner of Berners' Soda Fountain, to drizzle chocolate syrup over ice cream in 1881. He began selling them on Sundays for a nickel but soon offered them every day!
